U.S. House adjourns after Republican McCarthy fails to become speaker

The U.S. House of Representatives moved to adjourn until January 4 after three consecutive ballots failed to elect a new speaker the day before. U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, lost the third ballot for House speaker after 20 Republicans rejected his candidacy and backed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). The last time an election for speaker went to multiple ballots was in 1923.
