Who's ready to see the circus at the Montréal 1976 Summer Olympics with the Animaniacs? I bet we all are because the year 1976 is here! As we celebrate the United States Semiquincentennial next year; as well as the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics; the North American 2026 FIFA World Cup; and, of course, the 50th anniversary of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical comedy of all time: Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl: although Montréal 1976 Summer Olympics are held from July 17-August 1, 1976, in Montréal, Québec, Canada; and the only Canadian city to host the Summer Olympics. After Africa boycotted the Montréal Games when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to ban New Zealand, after the New Zealand national rugby union team had toured South Africa earlier in 1976 in defiance of the United Nations' calls for a sporting embargo due to their racist apartheid policies, Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl began Broadway previews at the Billy Rose Theatre (now Nederlander Theatre) to coincide with the Montréal 1976 Summer Olympics: which was held from July 17 to August 1, 1976; and opened in January 1977; and closed on January 12, 1978, after 1128 performances. The musical's score features a wide array of songs that capture the spirit of the story, ranging from lively showtunes to poignant ballads; and as with all the previous productions in the Animaniacs Casino Colors of Las Vegas series, the original Broadway cast featured Bob Wells as Yakko, Charles Schodowski as Wakko, and Animaniacs alum and Toronto native CA Spirit Regina herself as her character Dot Warner, who've previously starred in her Broadway productions, as well as this Broadway production of Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl. Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl was made into a 6½-hour television special which first aired at noon after Saturday morning on NBC, on January 8, 1977: a week after the original Broadway production began. Filmed on video over the course of 4 months during and after the Montréal 1976 Summer Olympics, the show was significantly shortened, and the script significantly changed, and some of the songs were dropped from this production, while the sound of the remaining musical numbers was updated to a more contemporary 1970s sensibility. This television special was co-produced by the Spirit Company and Warner Bros. Television for broadcast by the NBC network. This television special tells the story of a circus arriving at the Montréal 1976 Summer Olympics by focusing on the Animaniacs and the rest of the Warner family and their preparations for the circus and eventual competition in Montréal 1976. This television special was first premiered in the United States on January 8, 1977: a week after the original Broadway production began; but it also received a Canadian television broadcast also on January 8, 1977 on both CBC Television in English and Télévision de Radio-Canada in French: making it the very first North American simulcast special to be broadcast on television. The audience of this remake felt that the NBC television special adaptation of the musical lacked the energy of the original Broadway show; and this NBC 6½-hour television special was released three years later on VHS in 1980 under the Warner Home Video label, and later released on DVD and Blu-ray to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original 1977 Broadway production and its NBC television special. Following the cancelation of the 2000 Broadway revival to avoid competition from the video Barney's Super Singing Circus, the 2015 Toronto revival/2017 Broadway revival/2017 limited London and Dublin revival runs of Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl was mounted at the Ed Mirvish Theatre for a five-month run in Toronto 2015, which moved to Broadway at the Imperial Theatre for a seven-month run, and then the limited London and Dublin revivals had a short three-month run: all four revivals collaborated with Cirque du Soleil and Jim Henson's Pajanimals: under the name: "Animaniacs × Cirque du Soleil × Pajanimals: Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl". The final 2016 Broadway revival performance of Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl was filmed on September 4, 2016; and released on DVD/Blu-ray/Digital HD in February 2017 as we get ready to do the 2017 DVD opening of Animaniacs Super Singing Circus Girl: 4:00 Warner Bros.
