Mendelssohn: Andante Op.7/1 for piano

In memory of our friend Helgard, recently deceased. This is the first of a collection of Sieben Charakterstücke Op.7 and is marked 'Sanft und mit Empfindung' (quietly, with feeling). It was composed around 1825 and testifies to the influence Bach's work had on Mendelssohn at this time. The imitative four part texture is maintained throughout and combined with a depth of expression which Mendelssohn's later music only occasionally reaches. A profound contemplation.
