"Aloha from Hawaii by Satellite" was a concert starring American singer Elvis Presley, held at the Honolulu International Center on January 14, 1973, and broadcast live via satellite to audiences in Asia and Oceania. The show was broadcast on a delay in Europe. In the United States, NBC chose to broadcast a 90-minute television special of the concert on April 4 to avoid programming conflicts with "Super Bowl VII" and "Elvis on Tour," which were showing in cinemas at the time. Elvis resumed touring across the United States in 1970. Inspired by Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972, Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, decided to pursue a live broadcast concert featuring Presley and made a deal with RCA Records and the NBC network to produce the concert. Proceeds from the show were donated to the Qui Lee Cancer Foundation. Marty Pacetta produced the show. A rehearsal concert was filmed on January 12th. The special garnered high ratings in countries where it was broadcast live. The U.S. television special became NBC's highest-rated program of the year and received favorable reviews from critics. The soundtrack album was Presley's final number one on the Billboard album chart. This video shows footage from the rehearsal concert two days earlier. Soundtrack RCA Records released the soundtrack album worldwide in February 1973 on quadraphonic format. RCA employed two of its own record pressing plants to produce the album. The LP's cover featured the phrase "We Love Elvis" written in different languages. The double LP reached number one on the Billboard 200. Aloha From Hawaii was Presley's second double album (excluding compilations), and it was his first to reach number one on the charts since 1965, as well as his last number one album during his lifetime. The album sold 500,000 copies in two weeks and was certified gold one week later. The album was subsequently certified 5x platinum.
