New CSIRO partnership with Chinese laboratory 'is legitimate but has its problems'

Australian Strategic Policy Institute's Michael Shoebridge says a new research partnership between the CSIRO and China's Qingdao National Laboratory represents "a ghost of Christmas past" between the two countries. Security experts have warned against the CSIRO's partnership with a Chinese national laboratory for marine science and technology. The two science agencies are currently embarking on a research partnership that could see the development of a satellite-based laser to detect foreign submarines. Mr Shoebridge told Sky news host Peta Credlin there is "lots of legitimate" research taking place in this partnership. "But there's military utility to understanding how the oceans work and that's where the problem is with this kind of partnership," he said. Image: Getty
