But before Aronofsky became a superstar with films like Requiem For a Dream and The Black Swan, Aronofsky almost adapted some of your favorite comic book movies for the screen. But even though he’s been trying, we’ve never gotten a Darren Aronofsky comic book movie. For example, we almost got a Darren Aronofsky Ronin movie. Based on the influential graphic novel by Frank Miller, Ronin is the story of a samurai in a cyberpunk dystopia. Inspiring everything from Samurai Jack to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Frank Miller’s Ronin is destined to be an amazing movie someday. Unfortunately we never got to see an Aronofsky Ronin, since the project fell through. But after his next film, all of Hollywood was interested in Aronofsky. Requiem for a Dream made Aronofsky’s reputation, and soon the pieces were in motion for another comic character to be tackled by Aronofsky: Batman. The world prepared for another collaboration between Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky: Batman: Year One. Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One was a back-to-basics take on the character’s origin, and it revitalized Batman the same way The Dark Knight Returns did years before. The Darren Aronofsky Batman movie we never got to see would have been very different from the eventual Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and other Christopher Nolan Batman movies. Darren Aranofsky Batman: Year One movie might have made some fans angry with it’s radically changed, realistic take on the Batman character. Miller and Aronofsky turned in a script to the studio, who took one look at it and gave them the boot. Their gritty, R-rated Batman: Year One movie wouldn’t fly with Warner Brothers, so Aronofsky moved on to another project we never got to see: A Darren Aronofsky Watchmen movie. Based on the comic by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore, Watchmen is one of the greatest graphic novels ever created. The Zack Snyder Watchmen movie we got was pretty decent for what it tried to do, but we would have loved to see what a Darren Aronofsky Watchmen movie would have looked like. Based on a script by David Hayter, the writer of X-Men and voice of Solid Snake, Darren Aronofsky’s Watchmen is just another lost project we never got to see, like the Terry Gilliam Watchmen. Another Darren Aronofsky superhero movie that never left the ground was a Darren Aronofsky Superman movie. He was offered the chance to direct the followup to Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, but we never got to see a Darren Aronofsky Man of Steel. Instead, we got a Zack Snyder Man of Steel. But that’s okay, because Aronofsky was working on another superhero with Fox and Marvel: Wolverine. That’s right, we almost got to see Logan in the hands of Darren Aronofsky. Wolverine, or rather, The Wolverine. The Darren Aronofsky Wolverine movie would have been based in Japan, and it would have required too much time away from home for Darren Aronofsky. The Wolverine movie was eventually made by James Mangold. The Wolverine was okay, but the next James Mangold Wolverine movie was an absolutely incredible movie by James Mangold: Logan. The James Mangold Logan movie was a huge success, so we’re not too upset about missing the Darren Aronofsky Wolverine movie. We’re sure there will be a Darren Aronofsky superhero movie someday.
