Presider: Fr. Brian Walker, O.P. Parish: Dominican Friars Choir: Mother of Perpetual Help TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you and with your spirit. A proclamation of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. Glory to you o Lord. The rulers sneered at Jesus and said "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." he replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ Today we celebrate the great feast of Christ the King. It is the last Sunday of the church year which means that next Sunday we will be starting Advent. We have a chance to start anew. But before we get to tomorrow we have to make it through today. When I think of a king, I find myself thinking of a leader. Down through history we have all heard about various types of leaders. There have been the good and there have been the bad. What is it that makes a good leader a good leader? I think that you have to bring people together and then you have to make sure that you bring out the best in those people. If you stop and think about some of the leaders that were true leaders, you'd think of many positive images. I don't think that people would be too quick to choose Adolph Hitler or Benito Mussolini as good leaders. They did not bring out the best in people but in many cases only made the situation worse. Jesus on the other hand is totally different, from the very beginning, he was the ideal leader. He not only brought out the best in people, and united them, but he also helped the people to think to use what God had given them and as you continue ahead all of you with your plans, think about the good things that Jesus has brought out and done in you to make you a better person. Thank him and pray for the future. We know not what lies ahead. There is so much fear, there is so much trepidation. We hear about different things going on but I think that we also just like that one hanging with him, we have to think about what he promises each and every one of us and that is paradise. We need only ask and the Lord will give it to us. Help us to truly be the people that you have called us to be, Lord. Amen.
