(Dec. 31) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] The Taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing at a base in eastern Afghanistan that killed eight American civilians and one Afghan. It is not immediately clear how the suicide bomber was able to circumvent security at the base. The bombing took place in the city of Khost -- in a province that borders Pakistan and is a Taliban stronghold. A U-S congressional official say C-I-A employees are believed to be among the victims. The official went on to say another six Americans were wounded. The eight American deaths is the worst loss of life for the U-S in Afghanistan since October. The C-I-A has not yet commented on or confirmed the deaths.
