The Narendra Modi government has clarified that India's population has not surpassed China's. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, MoS Home Affairs Nityanand Rai cited a report by the Health Ministry which puts India's population at 139 Crore at July 1. This comes months after the UN projected that China will cede to be the most populous country as India will take the lead.
