When Washington plays Frank Lucas we get the sense of a man that has aged and has given up the street game, that he has done his time and has attempted to live straight; however, it seems that all the debts that he accumulated during his time on the streets don't seem to be due to be paid off anytime soon and that there are those who have been waiting for the perfect moment to collect the debt that Frank owes them in the form of blood. Keanu Reeves will enter the scene as Detective Marcus Cole; an idealistic police officer who idolized the legendary detective that took down Frank Lucas, and now must decide whether the aging gangster needs to be protected or if justice delayed is simply one more crime that is being committed. I think this concept is compelling because it asks the question of what happens after the fall — can a person such as Frank Lucas ever completely leave the lifestyle that they developed behind them, or does the empire that they constructed continue to pull them back even though they may no longer have anything to gain and everything to lose? This film explores two ideas: legacy and consequences. As Frank Lucas navigates a world where the mere mention of his name still carries considerable weight, but his power has dissipated to the point at which he is vulnerable to young criminals that view him as either a legend that they need to surpass, or a liability that they need to eliminate. You will witness Denzel Washington give a nuanced performance in portraying a man who has lost his swagger, but retains the intelligence that built his empire; a man that has to use those same skills that he used to build his empire, to merely survive rather than to conquer. Keanu Reeves gives a sincere and determined performance in depicting a cop that begins to believe the systems propaganda regarding reformed criminals, until he watches Frank operate and realizes that the line between law and justice becomes blurred, as often the institutions that enforce the law are as corrupt as the criminals that they prosecute. The film also portrays a world where the drug trade has evolved beyond Frank's blue-collar heroin smuggling to corporate level pharmaceutical corruption that makes his operation appear quaint compared to today's pharmaceuticals. The film will include crime drama with themes of mortality and redemption, tense scenes in which Frank's past comes back to haunt him in ways that he cannot shoot or buy his way out of, and a story that poses the question of whether anyone who rose as high and fell as far as Frank Lucas can achieve any measure of peace or if some of the things that he did will continue to haunt him for the rest of his life despite the fact that he has served his time.
