We continue with our ancient philosophy course! Did you know that Aristotle solves the problem of change created by the pre-Socratic philosopher Parmenides? Yes, Parmenides of Elea, the one who said that motion was impossible because it involved going from non-being to being (and vice versa). His thought generated a cataclysm among the pre-Socratics, and all the philosophers who came after him attempted to reconcile Parmenides' logical principles with the multiple and changing reality revealed to us by the senses. Thus, the pluralists (Empedocles of Agrigento, Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, and the atomists, Democritus and Leucippus) proposed that multiplicity was, in some way, original, and Plato, for his part, developed his famous Theory of Ideas as a solution. But it was not until the philosophy of Aristotle that this problem, which gave so much fodder to Sophists like Zeno of Elea, was finally resolved. What is change for Aristotle? Aristotle, king of ancient philosophy, proposes that change is not a step from absolute non-being to being, but from relative non-being (or not-being "yet") to being; or, to put it another way: from being in potential to being in actuality. If act is what a thing is here and now, indeed; potency is what that thing can be. In this way, change implies the actualization of a potential, of something that, while not actual, was in some sense real. Through his novel concepts of act and potential, Aristotle shows that change is a step from being to being, a path between two distinct modes of being. So, problem solved! The doctrine of act and potential also helps the Stagirite explain multiplicity, which Parmenides also denied, and the permanence and unity, which, at the opposite extreme, were denied by the Heracliteans, the disciples of Heraclitus of Ephesus. Act and potential are, in short, one of Aristotle's most relevant contributions to the history of philosophy and thought. They also constitute the basic pillars of his entire philosophy of nature and even of his metaphysics: Aristotle's metaphysics is built on act and potential. His distinction between matter and form (hylomorphism), his analysis of the efficient cause and the final cause, his concept of God and the path by which we reach him... all are based on act and potency. So... What is Aristotle's philosophical interpretation of the problem of change? What are act and potency for Aristotle? What is the relationship between act and potency? Find out!
