The game was developed by a team of four Newgrounds users, Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games. The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s The game mainly revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of characters in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. The gameplay revolves around hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song. The game was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam in October 2020. A full version backed on Kickstarter titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game is under development. Friday Night Dustin' (stylized as FRIDAY NIGHT DUSTIN' and/or FND') is Friday Night Funkin' mod created by ChezzarCat (formerly known as WassabiSoja), and directed alongside Mar Mar. The mod is based on the fan-made AU (alternate universe) of the 2015 role-playing video game Undertale. This AU, simply known as Dusttale, originated on the tumblr blog Ask Dusttale. Sans, more commonly known as Murder!Sans and/or Dust!Sans, is the main protagonist of Dusttale. After gaining knowledge of the many Genocide Routes committed by the Player, he decided to pursue his own Genocide Route and kill the other monsters in order to collect as much LV as possible in hopes of defeating the human. He is the main opponent of the mod's main week, as well as an opponent near the end of the song YOU ARE Papyrus is the Sans's younger brother and a major character in Undertale, He wants to become a Royal Guard to gain fame and friends. He patrols and prepares many of Snowdin Forest's puzzles in hopes of capturing a human and earning his goal. In Dusttale and Friday Night Dustin, however, Papyrus inevitably is killed. He later reappears as a phantom hallucination. He is the opponent in the song Kinemorto before being killed by Sans, and reappears as an opponent in the song Cornered and Avulsion, and the secondary opponent in the songs Broken Reality and YOU ARE. Boyfriend is the main protagonist of Friday Night Funkin' and Friday Night Dustin'. He was a young rapper who was trying to date Girlfriend and sang through each rap battle in the game, up until Week 3, where Pico kills Girlfriend upon discovering time resets, causing Boyfriend to fear for his own life. He sought refuge but ended up falling into the Underground, instead staying there until he was possessed by the Player, becoming another vessel.
