Michinoku Coastal Trail (みちのく潮風トレイル): 18 A Memorable Trek Along The Tsunami's Path To Kesennuma

Here's the latest stage of our trek on the Michinoku Coastal Trail (みちのく潮風トレイル). We'll be doing about 500 kilometres, all on foot and carrying everything we need in backpacks, from Soma (the southern trailhead) and heading north to Ofunato, which near the midpoint of the 1,000 kilometre MCT trail. Today's walk began at the Oyamachi BRT (bus rapid transit) station, a 25 minute bus ride from our hotel near the Kesennuma Japan Rail Station. Distance-wise, we were looking forward to a leisurely 16 kilometer walk from the station at the outskirts of Kesennuma, through the city to our hotel, our destination for the day. However, it soon became apparent that our route would follow the route of the 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami as it roared inland from our starting point straight into the harbor of downtown Kesennuma, causing massive loss of life and property. It started within a couple of kilometres of our BRT station at the Ruins of the Toyo High School and the adjacent Kesennuma City Memorial Museum. from there the effects of the tsunami followed us all the way back to our hotel.
