In 2014, NBC, one of the top three American broadcasters, renewed its exclusive broadcast rights with the International Olympic Committee or IOC, a deal of $7.75 billion US dollars. The contract runs through the 2032 Olympics and includes three Winter and three Summer Games. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is the first game of the deal. NBC likely didn’t expect the world's perception of Beijing to change so quickly in 2022, and may have to pay a hefty bill for the misjudgment. There is no doubt that officials in Beijing want the Games to be perceived in a positive light. But they have too many objectives to fulfill, such as enforcing a strict viral clearance system and exhausting all means to win more medals than before, as well as stepping up efforts to suppress dissidents to maintain social stability and avoid any social scandals. These approaches and objectives are mutually constraining, making it impossible for the costly Winter Olympics to restore the declining image of the CCP in the international community.
