HIV Plotlines ep. 8 -- Soul Food

In this series, queer film and TV writer JP Larocque joins legendary drag queen and HIV activist Jade Elektra in dissecting popular film and TV series that have HIV in the plot. Episode 8: Soul Food (2004) A Black straight man contracting HIV was a hot-button topic in the early 90s, one that Soul Food explores in the Season 5 episode “Angelito Negro.” Did this plotline help dispel the narrative that HIV/AIDS is a “gay disease”? How did the “down low” narrative impact the way Black men talked about their HIV status? What types of stigma surrounding HIV still exist in pop culture? ABOUT THE HOSTS: Alongside recent work on CBC's Coroner, JP Larocque has written on Netflix's Another Life, Shudder's Slasher, CTV's Jann, CBC's Diggstown, and is creator and executive producer of the OUTtv digital series Gay Nerds. A proud member of both the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, JP is committed to diversity and inclusion in all of their work. Jade Elektra is a Black queer and HIV+ activist, drag queen, singer, recording artist (DJ Relentless), and stage performer originally from Tampa, Florida, based in Toronto, Ontario. Jade is openly living with HIV and through activism and outreach, has strived to make a positive impact for HIV-positive, queer people of colour, and LGBTQ communities in Toronto and around the world. Jade is a founder of POZPLANET and POZ-TO, which fight HIV/AIDS stigma by hosting social events, partnering with AIDS Service Organizations, and fundraising for community-based HIV/AIDS organizations.
