Why Diversity isn’t Working | Tiffany R. Smith | TEDxAgnesScottCollege

The U.S. Census projects that more than half of all Americans will belong to a minority group by 2044. Additionally, the current racial climate has triggered conversations and acts of civil disobedience from the streets of Ferguson to the Ivy Towers of universities. Although statistically enrollment for students of color has undoubtedly increased, this has not resulted in the necessary decrease of discriminatory experiences on college campuses. Now we must consider, how do we truly create inclusive environments? Tiffany R. Smith will humorously explore why diversity isn’t working. Tiffany earned her B.A. in Communication from Bowling Green State University and is a recent graduate of Kennesaw State University with a M.A. in Integrated Global Communication with an emphasis on the African Diaspora. Throughout her higher education experiences, Tiffany has worked diligently to create a more intersectional and inclusion environment at the Universities she has attended focusing on issues of antiblackness, misogyny, and homophobia. Beyond her social justice activism within academia, Tiffany has worked for Amnesty International, is a Founding Member at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and uses photography as a tool of cultural preservation and storytelling of marginalized people. In her free time Tiffany enjoys cycling, yoga, watching The Walking Dead, and spending time with her dog, Blue. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
