Various of victims' relatives and police outside the hospital STORYLINE A suicide bomber exploded next to Afghanistan's Interior Ministry on Saturday, killing at least 12 people and wounding more than 40, officials said. The Interior Ministry said 12 people were killed, including two policemen, and that 42 were injured. A Public Health Ministry official said 54 had been injured. He said the wounded had been taken to six different hospitals in Kabul, complicating officials' efforts to keep track of the casualties. The explosion happened a little before 8 a.m., as ministry employees were reporting to work, near a narrow dirt road where employees and civilians pass through a security gate. The Interior Ministry said the suicide attacker had been acting suspiciously, then tried to get close to a big gathering of people just beyond a police checkpoint. Criminal director of Kabul police Ali Shah Paktiawal told AP Television that an investigation into the incident was underway. Ambulances rushed to and from the bomb scene, which police cordoned off. Windows of nearby shops were shattered, and tables were overturned and thrown to the back of the shops by the blast. At least three shops were destroyed. Militants have been stepping up attacks across Afghanistan the last several months, including the use of roadside and suicide bombs. A suicide bomber killed 18 people in an attack outside the Helmand provincial governor's compound in the town of Lashkar Gah on Tuesday, and earlier this month a suicide car bomber rammed a US military convoy in Kabul, killing 16 people, including two American soldiers.
