Louis IV was Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine from 1877 to 1892 and is best known for his marriage to Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, the second daughter of Queen Victoria. Tragically losing his wife and youngest daughter to diphtheria, Louis would go on to reign as Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine for almost 15 years.
