Sermon - Pastor Lamont S. Jones Today's Message: It Is High Time to Wake Up And Love One Another — Rom. 13:8-14 ✵✵✵Prayer reminder: For Every Church In PG County To Become A House Of Prayer ✵✵✵ Background: In today’s passage, we transition from the believer’s responsibility to the government to the believer’s responsibility to the humanity. Outline: Love Is the Fulfillment of the Law vv.8-10 Love Reflects the Character of God Love Is A Trademark of Grace Wake Up And Put On The Lord Jesus Christ vv.11-14 Text: Love Is the Fulfillment of the Law vv.8-10 Rom. 13:8a Owe no one anything ... {This is not a prohibition against borrowing money. Consider: Exodus 22:25 "If you lend money to any of My people who are poor among you, you shall not be like a moneylender to him; you shall not charge him interest. Deut. 15:7-8 "If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs. Psalm 37:21 The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. Rom. 13:8b ... except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Love Is A Trademark of Grace Wake Up And Put On The Lord Jesus Christ vv.11-14 11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep {“Sleep” here refers to a lethargic, non-aggressive, lazy Christian life. Wuest}; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness {cp. John 3:17-21} , and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Rioting” is komos ... “a revel, a carousal, in the Greek writers, a nocturnal and riotous procession of half-drunken and frolicsome fellows, who after supper, parade through the streets with torches and music in honor of Bacchus or some other deity, and sing and play before the houses of their male and female friends; hence used generally of feasts and drinking-parties that are protracted till late at night and indulge in revelry” (Thayer). “Chambering” is koite ... “sexual intercourse.” “Wantonness” is aselgeia ... “unbridled lust, excess, licentiousness, shamelessness, insolence.” “Envying” is zelos ... “jealousy, an envious and contentious rivalry.” “Lusts” is epithumia ... “a craving, passionate desire,” good or bad, depending upon the context, here an evil one. When the Christian puts on Christ, he clothes his soul in the moral disposition and habits of Christ (Gifford). “Make provision” is poieo ... “to make,” and pronoia ... “forethought, provident care.” Denney defines as “an interest in it which consults for it, and makes it an object.” “Flesh” here could be understood in its physiological sense of the human body or in its moral sense of the totally depraved nature. An overbalanced interest in the former will result in the neglecting of the spiritual part of one’s life, and lead to sin. The slightest interest in the latter will bring sin into the life. ✔✔ ✔ Closing Prayer ☞ Receiving the free gift of eternal life Repent: Mt. 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Confess: Rom. 10:9-10, 13 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." Suggested Prayer: Knowing that I have sinned, and I need the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior, I now turn from my sins and trust Him for my eternal life. I ask Jesus Christ to forgive me, and to deliver me from sin’s penalty and power and give me eternal life. I now give Jesus Christ control of my life. From this time forward, as He gives me strength, I will seek to trust Him and obey Him in all areas of my life. Evangelism Explosion booklet “Do You Know” pg. 20 © ☞ ☞ Benediction — Heb. 13:20-21
