Part 7 | Shear Modulus of Rigidity | Complete Concept with Numerical | CUET | JEE MAIN | NEET

The shear Modulus of elasticity is one of the measures of the mechanical properties of solids. Other elastic moduli are Young’s modulus and bulk modulus. The shear modulus of material gives us the ratio of shear stress to shear strain in a body. It is measured using the SI unit pascal or Pa. The dimensional formula of shear modulus is M^1 L^-1 T^-2. It is denoted by G. It can be used to explain how a material resists transverse deformations but this is practical for small deformations only, following which they are able to return to the original state. This is because large shearing forces lead to permanent deformations (no longer elastic body). Topics to be covered: Modulus of Rigidity or Shear Modulus Numerical 1. A cube of aluminum of each side 4 cm is subjected to a tangential (shearing) force. The top of the cube is sheared through 0.012 cm w.r.t. the bottom face. Find (a) shearing strain, (b) shearing stress, (c) shearing force. (Given η = 2.08 x 10^11 dyne cm^-2) 2. A square lead slab of side 50cm and thickness 10cm is subjected to a shearing force (on its narrow face) of 9×10^4 N. The lower edge is riveted to the floor. How much will the upper edge be displaced? (Shear modulus of lead =5.6×10^−9 Nm ^−2) Instagram - https://instagram.com/sciencegurushiv...
