Actor/songwriter Korby Lenker lends his talents as the whiskey-drinking musician, whose rapidly changing affections surprise his polyester-clad girlfriend, played by Frazier. From the Artist: When I wrote “Darken,” I was listening to a steady diet of 1970’s and ‘80’s bluegrass. It’s no coincidence that this video feels like a personal tribute to guitarist Tony Rice’s golden era, both the music and the culture surrounding the music. The characters are almost caricatures of 70s era polyester-wearing hipsters, as they’re listening to records and drinking wine in a dim candle-lit room, playing Martin guitars on the front porch, and walking along old sidewalks covered in autumn leaves. I’ve always had a vision of how this video would go, and the most pivotal scene would be the moment when the guy doesn’t even bother to get up out of his chair to let the gal in. She has to stand in his doorway as he stares indifferently, and she accepts that he has completely given up on the relationship. This is a fun, self-deprecating song. And frankly, we are poking fun at the guy, too. He drinks too much, and he’s pretty inconsiderate when it comes to basic communication. This video shows off our East Nashville neighborhood in a cool way. At one point during the shooting, Korby turned to me and said, “I feel like Lockeland Springs is the center of the universe.” I replied, in all sincerity, “Me, too.” I imagine that our love for our neighborhood might shine through in the video. I’m grateful to fiddler Ward Stout for the use of his beautiful home, Korby Lenker for his top-notch acting, the video team who worked so hard on this, and Pied Piper Creamery for opening their doors early on a Sunday morning to serve us ice cream.
