UFC 277 | Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Peña | biggest upsets in MMA history | we all love an underdog Who doesn’t love an underdog? Sometimes, the best part of completely counting a fighter out is opening up that possibility for a huge upset. This weekend’s UFC 277 card has three fighters on it that continue to be counted out, despite having proven they’re more than capable of rocking the boat and stopping hype trains. At UFC 269, everyone thought Nunes would take that win with ease. They didn’t think Pena even deserved the shot, she was just good at trash talking and building a story that way. Which is wild, how much people belittled her skills in the run up. The way people compared the two fighters made it seem as though the UFC was throwing a lamb to the lioness. But it was simply because Nunes was looking untouchable. Four straight title defenses. No losses on her record since 2014. But it worked out perfectly for Pena, eh? She’s the underdog yet again, heading into the rematch and we’re talking about that, as well as the other two fighters who may just prove the bookies wrong, in this week’s video. ufc 276, Ufc 277, Amanda nunes, Julianna pena, Challenger, champion, Israel Adesanya. goat, ufc mma, greatest athletes of all time, Championship fight, manifestation, focus, determination, law of attraction, growth mindset, manifestation meaning, fixed mindset, jiri prochazka, Dana white, Conor mcgregor, Khabib, Ufc tonight, Mma, Combat sports, Sometimes the best part of completely counting a fighter out is opening up that possibility for a huge upset. There was only really one person saying that Pena was going to win this fight. And now that person is walking around with the belt. So you just remember that the next time you let doubt enter your mind. Yours or anyone else’s. It will not help you. Yes, let it fuel you to prepare as much as you possibly can. Yes, have multiple routes to success planned so you can adapt. But do not let any of those planned routes end in your failure, because that’s what will happen. Even when no one else is backing you, you need to back yourself. The first round of the fight was going perfectly to script. Nunes was dominating. All very standard programming. [show] But in the second round, Pena just turned that boxing ON and eventually secured a rear naked choke. There are two theories to what happened here. Many people watching said that Pena overwhelmed Nunes with her pace and the Lioness gassed herself out trying to land power punches to put her opponent out. But Nunes says it was Pena’s power that was actually the problem. She says she got caught for the first time in her life, and her body wasn’t prepared for it. She lost her balance and it was all downhill from there. Which is a pretty honest answer - she’s giving the new champ her due, at least. Oh no, wait. She went on to talk about all the issues in her fight camp that led to this performance. She said she had multiple knee injuries that prevented her from showing up 100%. She couldn’t train properly, she couldn’t work on conditioning, she couldn’t cut weight properly. Regardless of the issue, this fight will go down as one of the greatest upsets of all time. And there’s something so thrilling about watching a storyline play out that you never even considered would be possible. It’s like seeing a unicorn. But what other unicorns have we seen in MMA in recent years? I’m not going to count down the top 5 biggest upsets or owt, because how can you really rank them? I’m just going to relive my faves. Starting with - probably - the one that brought me the most joy. I’m. Not. Surprised. Motherfuckers. [show] Well, we all were - just a little, eh? McGregor was coming off that lightning-fast knockout win over the GOAT, Jose Aldo, to become featherweight champion, and also had one of the most dominant rises ever seen. Nate Diaz, meanwhile, was on vacation when he got the call to fight McGregor on two weeks' notice. [clip] Conor was on form in the run up, talking about Diaz’s physique, calling him soft, building up this idea in everyone’s mind that this was one hell of a mismatch. [clueless] Especially those fans that entered the sport with - and because of - Conor. They’d probably never even heard of Nate Diaz. What sad, sad lives they must have lived up until that point.
