Aziz Yildirim, president of the celebrated Fenerbahce soccer team, and other suspects have been charged in the scandal allegedly involving 19 league matches last season. Fenerbahce fans sang team songs and shouted Yildirim's name outside the courthouse in Silivri, a town near Istanbul. "I left my lover and came here to take Aziz Yildirim home," said one female fan. "We burn with passion for Fenerbahce," said another. Yildirim, who has denied any wrongdoing, is accused of match-fixing and establishing a crime ring according to the indictment, which includes records of wiretapped conversations between the suspects who allegedly exchanged encoded messages. He faces a maximum of 72 years in prison if found guilty. League champion Fenerbahce was barred from the lucrative Champions League because of its involvement in the match-fixing scandal and it could be stripped of its domestic title and face relegation. A lawyer for Besiktas football club, criticised the case, telling the Associated Press on Tuesday that it was a trial that had "gone astray."
