Buncombe County approves 2027 budget, totaling $484M+

On Tuesday, June 2, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the budget for fiscal year 2027. The county’s budget totals $484.4 million, according to a Buncombe County government press release. "It was just amazing how everybody came together as a team and worked together and came up with a budget," said Buncombe County Commissioner Jennifer Horton. According to the press release, the FY27 budget is structurally balanced, meaning “the county is using one-time revenues exclusively for one-time expenditures.” This includes a $2.6 million appropriated fund balance for one-time purchases and capital needs. Included in the budget is a tax rate of 43.20 cents per $100 of assessed value, which is a 3.98 cent property tax increase. The county adds that the set budget tax rate is a reduction of the recommended tax rate, which was 43.52 cents. With the new budget, the rate for a $500,000 house comes out to a tax bill of $2,161 annually, plus additional taxes like municipality and fire. The vote happened after every county commissioner commented on the proposed budget that was presented to them in their meeting on Tuesday.
