A few weeks ago I had a cutaway on my first jump of the day on a JFX 89 loaded at 1.95. The tension knot can be seen on the right side of the canopy. I have frequently occurring toggle fires, so when I began to spin I was sure it was another toggle fire. In reaction I quickly grabbed my toggles, and surprisingly it had no effect. This caused a moment of confusion because pulling my toggles always solves the problem. I let go of the right toggle, pulling the left hard to try to stop the spin, which was unsuccessful. I was also unable to see my canopy because the slider was in my face. I was losing altitude fast, and for all these reasons I did not try pumping the brakes . I cutaway and deployed the reserve, but because I was spinning so fast during the reserve deployment I opened into line twists. It briefly began to down-plane. I stopped the spin and was under a good reserve parachute by 1,800 feet. I landed safely and found main canopy and free bag in a nearby tree. #skydiving #skydivingmalfunction #tensionknot #cutaway #skydivingcutaway #parachute #reservedeployment #doublemalfunction #tensionknotmalfunction
