(4 Oct 1996) T/I: 10:01:00 Israeli police deployed 3,000 officers around the al-Aqsa mosque compound and other Arab quarters in East Jerusalem ahead of Friday's (4/10) prayers in case of a repetition of last week's bloody clashes. Heavily armed police and border guards, posted at the entrance to the mosque compound, searched worshippers and checked their identity cards. Despite Israeli promises to ease restrictions on the free movement of Palestinians in the autonomous areas, the West Bank town of Hebron is still under curfew. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chaired a meeting of his cabinet on Friday and briefed ministers on the outcome of the Israli-Palestinian summit in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday.
