The Rev. Ashton Williston's Sermon on Sunday, December 14, 2025

On the Third Sunday of Advent, the Rev. Ashton Williston, Associate Rector at Christ Church, Frederica, reflects on the tension between expectation and doubt, hope and darkness, as we journey toward the birth of Christ. Drawing on the familiar rhythms of Advent—the lighting of candles, the growing brightness amid shortening days—Mother Ashton invites us to consider how expectations shape our lives, from the everyday assumptions we rely on to the deeper hopes we carry for healing, justice, and God’s presence among us. This week’s Gospel reading turns our attention to John the Baptist, whose confident proclamation of the Messiah gives way to uncertainty as he sits behind prison walls. From the darkness, John asks the haunting question many of us have asked ourselves: “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Rather than offering easy answers, Jesus points to what can be seen and heard—signs of healing, restoration, and good news for the poor—and invites John, and us, to discern where God is already at work. This sermon speaks honestly to moments when faith wavers, prayers feel unanswered, and expectations fall short. Yet it also proclaims the enduring promise of Advent: Emmanuel—God is with us, even in doubt, even in darkness. As we slow down in these final weeks before Christmas, we are encouraged to remain watchful for Christ’s presence, to share hope with those in despair, and to trust that God’s work of healing is ongoing—now and into eternity. #Advent #ThirdSundayOfAdvent #Emmanuel #GodWithUs #FaithAndDoubt #HopeInDarkness #JohnTheBaptist #EpiscopalChurch #ChristChurchFrederica #AdventHope #WaitingAndWatching If this sermon spoke to you, please like and share this video to help spread the message of hope this Advent season.
