How To Make A Ferrocerium Rod Handle With Useful Tinder Storage

Ferro rods are great to carry around for making fire in any situation, whether its camping, survival, backyard fun, etc. When struck with a high carbon steel knife, a ferrocerium rod will throw numerous sparks that will hopefully light whatever dry tinder you have. People commonly mistake them as flint, since flint and steel can be used to throw sparks as well. Making a wood handle will help give you leverage when striking the rod. It can also be used as a last resort to get a fire started when tinder material/kindling is not in your area. You can scrape small flakes of wood off of the handle to hopefully catch a spark to light a fire. A hack that I found useful is to put storage holes inside of the handle. I then stuff these holes with cotton balls, jute twine, lint, or any other tinder. I then seal it in place with wax to keep the tinder dry and easy to light when I need it. This method works best since, the wax will also fill in the tinder and extend the initial fire, giving you more time to birth it into a larger fire.
