Australia heatwave: Nation endures hottest day on record. Australia has experienced its hottest day on record reaching a high of 40.9C (105.6F). This is the overall temperature across the country for the day. And even hotter could still occur breaking this record. The highest maximum temperature was recorded as 50.7 °C (123.3 °F) at Oodnadatta on 2nd January 1960. The human body (skin) can tolerate temperatures of 60°C (140°F), and water boils at 100°C (212°F).
