President Park Geun-Hye has vowed to recover the submerged Sewol ferry while attending a memorial service for the victims of the boat sinking, which killed over 300 people a year ago. The memorial was part of a nationwide event to mark the first anniversary of the deadly ferry tragedy on Thursday. The whole nation mourned the deceased, mostly high school students on a field trip. On the occasion of the memorial at the southwest port of Jindo, Park intended to meet with relatives of the victims but they left the site before her arrival. Jindo port is close to the ferry sinking site. There has been discord over the government's handling of the accident, including salvaging the 6,825-ton ship, as nine of the 304 victims remain missing. Memorial services were held throughout the nation yesterday but at one of the memorial services, there were clashes between protesters and police in the night after a rally by about 65,000 people in central Seoul. The protesters denounced the government's follow-up measures to deal with the accident. Ten people were arrested and several were injured during the clash, according to police.
