Inside Mylapore's Legendary Kapaleeswar Temple

Join me as I explore the grounds of the Kapaleeswarar Temple, situated in Mylapore in Chennai. This Shiva temple, originally built in the 7th century, is one of the most famous temples in Chennai, and is teeming with history, culture, and spiritual vibes. The lore behind this place is fascinating - Shiva's consort Parvati was at one time cursed and living as a peahen. She came to this location to worship and regained her original form, and that's how the place gets its name: Mylapore literally means the place of the dancing peacock. According to an account of the Ramayana, Lord Sri Ram was said to have also worshipped Lord Shiva here! The original temple was built in the 7th century and located near the beach, but was damaged and rebuilt 300 years ago in the current location. I had a wonderful divine time here and highly recommend a visit! #Chennai #temple #shiva #religion #travel #culture #history #legend
