Pakistan is facing one of its most serious flood emergencies in years, with authorities in Sindh and Punjab on high alert as surging river waters threaten Multan and devastate farmlands. According to the Flood Forecasting Division, Sindh’s Guddu Barrage recorded outflows of more than 440,000 cusecs, while Sukkur surpassed 350,000 cusecs, both continuing to rise. Upstream, Panjnad Headworks is in very high flood, with Sutlej and Ravi rivers also at exceptionally high levels. In Punjab, officials are closely monitoring the Chenab River near Multan. Emergency plans include the possible breaching of the Sher Shah dyke to divert water and protect urban centers. Authorities are racing to reinforce embankments as the water nears a critical threshold. The agricultural impact is devastating: over 1.3 million acres of farmland remain underwater, with nearly two million people displaced. Cotton has suffered the heaviest losses, with up to 35% destroyed across Punjab and as much as half wiped out in Bahawalnagar. Farmers warn of Rs500 billion in losses, alongside soaring food inflation and disruptions to the textile industry. Satellite imagery confirms that more than 3,600 square kilometers across 24 districts are submerged. Relief operations continue, with local police and disaster authorities delivering aid and urging residents in at-risk areas to remain vigilant. Sindh and Punjab remain braced for the next surge of floodwaters moving south in what could be one of Pakistan’s most destructive monsoon disasters in recent history. #PakistanFloods #Multan #Sindh #Punjab #PakistanDisaster #ChenabRiver #GudduBarrage #SukkurBarrage #Flood2025 #PakistanNews #ClimateCrisis #PakistanAgriculture #TextileIndustry #FoodInflation #DisasterRelief --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn News English is your window into the latest news, insight, and features from South Asia and beyond.
