How fast does the image move when the object and/or mirror moves? We use a simple component method and solve quick cases. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN Split velocity into two components: parallel to mirror (tangential) and perpendicular to mirror (normal). Fixed mirror: • Image tangential component: v_img_parallel = v_obj_parallel • Image normal component: v_img_normal = - v_obj_normal Moving mirror with velocity u (vector): v_img = v_obj - 2 * ((v_obj - u) dot n) * n • Mirror moving along its normal with speed u (object fixed) → image speed = 2u along the normal. • Mirror moving parallel to itself → image motion is unchanged by the mirror’s motion. Worked examples: object approaching mirror, mirror approaching object, both moving.
