http://DentistWichitaKS.com General Dentist, Wichita KS, Dr. Thomas Fankhauser explains safety surrounding amalgam (silver) fillings. Patients who have amalgam fillings in their teeth, have no cause for worry, despite publications of studies referencing the presence of mercury in silver fillings. According to the studies, mercury will escape from the surface of the fillings, when engaged in eating or chewing, causing detrimental side effects on the health. It is not a major health concern, as indicated by worldwide studies concluding in agreement that amalgam fillings are relatively safe. Composite fillings, however, offer better dental restorations than amalgam fillings, and last longer, depending on the size of the cavity to be treated. The only reason to replace silver fillings is for aesthetic advantages in improving the cosmetic appearance and increasing the force of the bite, but ultimately, the decision to opt for the cosmetic dental procedure, is in the control of the patient.
