The Vibe Saxophone Quartet performs the 4tet premiere of "Pop Rock in Metal" by Olivia Kieffer at The University of Southern Mississippi April 18, 2018 Jeff Humphrey - Soprano Saxophone Aaron Manigault - Alto Saxophone Zach Everett - Tenor Saxophone Matthew Gioia - Baritone Saxophone “Pop Rock in Metal” is a saxophone quartet written for a consortium of 6 adventurous American sax ensembles. The idea for the piece came to me while I was conducting the Sax Orchestra at the 2017 Mana Saxophone Institute. I've been enamored with saxophones ever since I started writing music; I love how they can sound like many different instruments at once, and have such an enormous range of timbral possibilities. It took standing in front of a 40-piece sax orchestra to truly "get" the power of sound that can come from the instrument. It's Metal! This quartet is in 3 continuous parts: An energetic 6/8 movement with melody, rhythms, and sharp dynamic contrasts reminiscent of 1990’s emo guitar riffs; a slow and lyrical yet joyful interlude; and a wild & bombastic, pedal-to-the-metal movement which keeps the audience and the performers on their toes! --Olivia Kieffer / vibesaxophone http://oliviakieffer.com/
