That's one of the big reasons Macao stands out right now: while June marks the heart of sargassum season for most of Punta Cana's beaches, the Punta Macao cape blocks the currents that carry seaweed in from the Atlantic, so this stretch usually stays clear even when the resort beaches further south are dealing with brown weed. Today the water is clean, the sand is wide and golden-white, and the surf is doing its thing. Macao is a public beach with a more local, natural feel than the Bávaro resort strip — fewer hotels, more space, and a working-beach atmosphere with food shacks and vendors. Weather is typical for early June: highs around 88°F, water around 82°F, with quick passing showers possible. Macao Beach The most famous public beach in the Punta Cana area, set well north of the resort zone. Known for its surf — Macao gets real waves, which makes it a top spot for surf lessons and bodyboarding, but it also means the water is rougher and shallower than the calm Bávaro beaches, so check conditions before swimming. White sand framed by low cliffs, a relaxed local crowd (busiest on weekends), and beach shacks serving fresh fish and cold drinks. It's a free public beach; you'll pay only if you rent a chair. Punta Macao The rocky cape at the end of the beach that gives the area its name. It's the natural feature doing the heavy lifting on seaweed — currents bend around the point and pull sargassum away from the shore, which is why Macao tends to stay clean when other beaches don't. The little sheltered cove tucked behind the cape is Playa Escondida, which has calmer water and no waves, though the scenery there is more rugged (sand mixed with rock) than the classic tropical look. Good spot for photos and for taking in the headland views. Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana The main resort on this beach — a large family-friendly all-inclusive with around 500 suites, opened in 2019, part of the Hyatt Inclusive Collection. Sits in a slightly protected bay section, so the water directly in front of the resort is calmer than the open surf at the public beach. Nine restaurants, several pools, a water park with slides and a lazy river, Explorer's Club for kids, Core Zone for teens, spa, casino, and a nightclub. Guests can also visit other Dreams/Hyatt properties in the area.
