How to Install a Tile Backsplash (And Avoid Beginner Mistakes)

In this DIY video, I demonstrate how to install a tile backsplash in a kitchen using a proven process that yields pro results - even if it's your first time tiling. List of tools and materials: https://www.handymanstartup.com/tileb.... This comprehensive step-by-step tutorial is designed to provide everything you need to know. I start out sharing what the easiest kind of tile is to install and how to figure out how much tile you need. Then, we jump into the planning stage, where you determine your tile layout and where you will start tiling. This is the most challenging part, and I provide clear tips and guidance on how to avoid tile slivers and ensure smooth transitions. This is where most beginners make mistakes. Next, I discuss a method for creating a diagram or template of your wall. The secret to getting pro results is to cut as many tiles as possible before you even start gluing. This allows you to focus on applying the tile when it's time, without frantically trying to cut, clean, glue, and add spacers before the thinset sets. There are only three tools you'll need to cut your backsplash tile. A wet tile saw, an angle grinder, and maybe a manual tile cutter. Once the tile is cut, it's a matter of gluing it to the wall with thinset or mastic. You can use either one for a backsplash, and they both have tradeoffs. I discuss them in the video. Once the backsplash is in, wait 12 hours, then grout it, caulk it, and you're done. Another secret to achieving professional results is how you caulk it. You'll want to tape the counters and backsplash before caulking; otherwise, it will make a mess. If you follow this step-by-step process, you can do this! In this project, I'm installing mosaic picket tiles that I purchased from Floor and Decor. It was $5 per sheet. I also used some white edging made my Schulter to end the tile on an open wall. ---Time Stamps --------------------------- 00:00 - Intro 00:42 - Prepping the walls (Demo and drywall) 02:07 - Choosing the best tile and other materials 02:54 - Planning the tile layout 04:35 - How to measure and cut tile edging 05:35 - The secret to getting pro results as a beginner. 08:02 - 3 ways to cut tile 08:36 - Prepping the kitchen for install 09:13 - How to apply backsplash tile to drywall 12:52 - How to cut tile around outlets 13:17 - How to grout a backsplash 15:46 - How to caulk your backsplash tile 16:53 - Project costs and time required 17:47 - BONUS TIPS --Materials and Tools needed for the job --------------------- List of tools, materials, and more: https://HandymanStartup.com/TileBacks... --About my YouTube Channel --------------------- I create high-quality tutorials that help you get pro results on your first try. --Related Videos ----------------------------- How to seal grout:    • How To Seal Grout - DIY for Beginners   How to cut tile:    • 5 Ways to Cut Tile - Everything You Need t...   How to mix thinset:    • How To Mix Thinset - Essential tips for sm...   How to install tile in a shower:    • How to Tile a Shower (Step-by-Step for Beg...   --About Handyman Startup -------------------------- Business training for growing a profitable handyman business.
