The flying red ? block or the Hammer Brothers, which can appear at the beginning of a level, may not be used in any way. You must start each level with certain power-ups, and only certain power-ups may be collected in the levels. "Without power-ups" means that the challenge must be completed as a small Mario or Luigi. You may never take damage. Using checkpoints is prohibited. The challenges are only considered completed when you touch the flagpole at the end of the level or defeat the boss. A secret exit may never be used; only the normal exit may be used. Challenges in towers and fortresses generally only apply up to the boss door. From then on, in the fight against Bowser Jr., you must let him attack for at least 15 seconds (after he emerges from his shell) before his next life can be taken away. Special rules apply to all other boss fights, which will be explained in more detail where appropriate. You may never double damage a boss with a stomp attack. Each challenge has a difficulty level from 1 (very doable) to 10 (brutally difficult).
