Within a century it became one of the greatest trading ports in the world. How was that even possible? In this video I dig into the real history behind Melaka’s rapid rise. We go beyond the museum plaques and the simplified story to uncover the man Parameswara actually was — a Srivijayan prince who fled Palembang with a floating city of ships, nobles, artisans and soldiers — and the forgotten people who made it all possible: the Orang Laut, the “People of the Sea.” These indigenous boat-dwelling communities were the secret weapon of both the Srivijaya Empire and the Melaka Sultanate. They were the guides, navy, information network and muscle that controlled the Straits. Without them, Melaka as we know it may never have existed.
