Yugo SKS Rifle: Testing At the Range
Testing function and accuracy with a 1987 Yugo SKS Model 59/66A1 7.62x39 Rifle with Flip-out Blade Bayonet. Overall it had decent groups, and only a couple of malfunctions which I contribute to the dirtiness of the rifle. Overall its in great shape though. No rust or pitting on most metal surfaces. The barrel is clear with no pitting or damage, and the rifling is clear and defined all the way to the end of the muzzle. The stock is in great shape and just needs a little bit of wood stock restoring done to make it shine. This rifle came with the grenade launching muzzle device and flip-up grenade launching sights which doubles as the action's gas shut-off valve. When launching grenades, they use a round similar to a "blank round", which provides the propulsion, but does not have an actual projectile (bullet). In order to achieve maximum velocity from the blank round used to launch the grenade, the gas system is cut-off in order to prevent gas run-off normally designed to eject the spent round and chamber the next... Allowing this normally leaked gas to be used for extra propulsion for the grenade launch. The Yugo SKS rifle generally comes with flip-up night sights to be used in conjunction with the standard sks iron sights. These night sights are self-illuminated with tritium vial inserts having a glow lifespan of around 10-15 years. These tritium vials can be removed and replaced (see below how to video) which is good, as most of these surplus rifles are much older than that! The night sight design is also used on the Yugo m70 ak rifle variants, as well as the Serbian Zastava O-PAP, m70ab2, and m70b1 rifles imported and sold by Century Arms in the US. Detachable SKS Magazine conversions are available, allowing a standard 30-round capacity, but most usually leave it in the original configuration. This yugo sks rifle also includes the guide lips integrated into the front of the bolt carrier which allows fast loading of the magwell from the topside of the receiver using 10-Round SKS Stripper Clips. It also had the fixed flip-out blade style sks bayonet attached. Sometimes you will find SKS rifles with the bayonet missing and even the bayonet lug removed (or "neutered") to meet earlier import restrictions, or State specific regulations. Although fairly low in value in collector terms or compared to the ak47 platform, they have gone up significantly in value over the last 20 years and the price continues to rise. Supply of these surplus rifles have also dwindled down, having only the Chinese Norinco Type 56 SKS "Gunsmith Specials" being most prevalent on the market.
