John Edward Jones, a 26-year-old medical student and father, entered Nutty Putty Cave in Utah on November 24, 2009, with family and friends. Searching for a tight passage called the "Birth Canal," he made a fatal mistake and crawled headfirst into an unmapped section called "Ed's Push." He became trapped upside down in a crevice roughly 10 by 18 inches wide. The angle of the tunnel caused blood to pool in his head and fluid to fill his lungs, making it impossible for him to pull himself back. Rescuers worked for 27 hours to free him, even rigging a complex pulley system. They almost succeeded. But then a pulley anchor broke loose, and John slipped back into the crevice. He died of cardiac arrest shortly after. His body couldn't be safely recovered without risking more lives. The decision was made to leave him there. Nutty Putty Cave was permanently sealed with concrete and explosives, transforming the popular spelunking site into his final resting place.
