Take Your Headshots to the Next Level with These 4 Easy Lighting Setups | Level Up with Ab Sesay
How do you go from a headshot to an editorial beauty shot? In this video, we walk you through the steps of only using two lights to create 4 dramatically different looks. We only use two lights so everyone should easily be able to execute these same ideas as well. Please note, that if you don't have the exact light shapers used in this video, I have included links to alternate light shapers as well. The thing I wanted to demonstrate the most in this video is how you can get multiple different looks from simply using the same lighting setups, but simply dialing in different lighting ratios. But don't be scared away by the word lighting ratios. Simply think of it as the differences between two different light sources, or the difference between the way the light falls on two different parts of your set. The lights I'm using for this shoot include a Profoto Telezoom reflector and a Profoto deep white umbrella and two V-Flats. For the first look, I’m simply bouncing the Profoto Deep White Umbrella into two V-Flats to produce a simple high-key look. You could also simply use a white wall. For the second look, I am using only the Telezoom reflector positioned up and to the left of our model giving me a very dramatic look falling on the model's face. For the third look, I’m mixing both the Telezoom reflector and the Umbrella firing into the V-Flats for a hard light with a soft fill. Giving us more detail in our shadows than what we got on look #2 For our fourth look, I added gels to both lights to give us a more editorial feel. The tones make it feel more like a street scene at night lit by a street lamp, and green neon lights from a store window.
