Mexico gold heist: armed robbers steal $8.5 million in gold from McEwen mine

The robbery occurred at the facility of Canadian company McEwen in Mexico’s Sinaloa state on early Tuesday, Noroeste reported. Mexican authorities said the robbery was likely an inside job, CHEK reported Eight men armed with rifles entered the mine and reportedly handcuffed two workers at the mine before taking the keys to various doors from one of the workers. They were able to enter the vault as the door was left open since the day before, according to Noroeste. McEwen Mining said an estimated 900 kilograms of gold-bearing concentrate containing approximately 7,000 ounces of gold were stolen from the refinery. The amount of stolen gold equals to one-sixth of its annual production, according to teleSUR.
