Lords raises concerns on new laws created without proper checking by Parliament | House of Lords

Two House of Lords reports have highlighted a growing trend by government, made worse by Brexit and COVID-19, to give sweeping powers to ministers to make regulations, which create new laws without proper scrutiny by Parliament. The committees highlight a lack of effective scrutiny of secondary legislation which, unlike Acts of Parliament, is not subject to several stages of robust checking. The reports by the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee and Delegated Powers Committee have called on the government to ‘stop ruling by diktat and restore power to Parliament’ today, calling for effective scrutiny of laws that affect us all.
