Wolves v Crystal Palace, 30th October 1965

Extended highlights of the Second Division match between Wolves and Crystal Palace at Molineux on 30th October 1965. The 1965-66 season was one of sizeable transition for Wolves; adjusting to Second Division football after their relegation the previous season and the managerial changes that saw the dismissal of the legendary Stan Cullis during that relegation season and the subsequent appointment of caretaker manager Andy Beattie. Then followed Ronnie Allen's appointment as Wolves manager after Beattie's departure in September 1965. Allen left a fine legacy at Molineux that warrants praise indeed. He not only led Wolves back to the top flight in 1966-67 but, crucially, signed or nurtured players who would serve Wolves with great distinction for many years ahead. The likes of Mike Bailey, Dave Wagstaffe, Kenny Hibbitt, Derek Parkin, Derek Dougan, Frank Munro, Phil Parkes, John McAlle and John Richards provided the fulcrum of the Wolves side throughout much of the 1970s and a team that were within touching distance of greatness in the early '70s in particular. Allen's first signing as Wolves manager was centre-half John Holsgrove and he too would serve Wolves well in a Molineux career of some 202 appearances over a six year period. Holsgrove appears alongside the tough-tackling Dave Woodfield at the heart of the Wolves defence for the match against Palace before 21,623 at Molineux. Other notable players for Wolves against Palace include England internationals Bobby Thomson at left-back and Ron Flowers, a member of England's World Cup winning squad of 1966 and nearing the end of his distinguished Wolves career, and the mercurial Peter Knowles -- top scorer for Wolves in the 1965-66 season with 21 league and cup goals. Palace, who were destined to finish the season in mid-table, included in their team at Molineux the skilful David Burnside who subsequently joined Wolves in September 1966 and assisted Ronnie Allen's team in their promotion back to the First Division at the end of the 1966-67 season. Others selected by manager Dick Graham included the former England international and prolific centre-forward Derek Kevan and goalkeepeer John Jackson who, in a near-decade of fine service at Selhurst Park, appeared in 393 matches for Palace and performed superbly at Molineux to prevent his team from suffering a heavy defeat.
