Crop Duster Plane Crash 240th Ave and Smoky Hill River Rd 8/20/19

Fatality crop duster bi-plane crash that occurred just west of the 240th Avenue and Smoky Hill River Road intersection near Schoenchen, KS in rural Ellis County south of Hays, KS. The plane was an Ag Cat 1985 bi-wing spray plane. The pilot, John Werth, 70 of Schoenchen did not survive the crash. The plane did have chemicals on board and the Ellis County Rural Fire department had that under control. The Ellis County Sheriff's department and Ellis County EMS also responded to the crash site. The fourth caller is now advising it's a crop duster. Didn't advise if anyone was out. --09:28-- 631 also responding 481 - In the ditch, there is basically nothing left of the plane 481 - still on fire in the (inaudible) 631 to unit on scene: is there any patients? --09:29-- 212 enroute 480 - at this time, guessing no one is alive in there 633 copy's the traffic Rescue50 enroute crew of 4 --09:30-- 481 - gentlemen's wife is down on the way to see if that's who it was or not 400 - 481 might want to keep her away until S.O. can make contact with her --09:31-- 631 disregarding --09:33-- 481 to 400 204 10-23(on scene) --09:34-- 211 10-23 blocking off 240th and Smoky Hill River RD --09:35-- 200 10-23 210 10-23 on the north side --09:36-- 400 on scene 633 staging at 240th and smoky hill Engine50 responding crew of 3 --09:37-- Tender50 responding crew of 2 --09:38-- HAYS to 204: Coroner is contacted, will be enroute --09:40-- 212 10-23 400 to Rescue50: when you get on scene, I want you to pull past the crash site and pull a engine (half?) and a booster line to work on both the grass fire and fuselage --09:41-- 450 on scene Rescue50 on scene --09:43-- 211 - I don't know if anyone called it but we are 10-36(no further assistance needed) for law enforcement --09:44-- 481 to Engine80 --09:45-- 400 - Water on fire --09:48-- 204 - I've been relocated at 220th and Smoky hill to block traffic --09:49-- Engine50 on scene 450 - Pull down here where the rescue is we will pull another booster line --09:50-- Tender50 on scene Engine80 on scene, crew of 2 450 to Tender50: Go ahead and stage with the ambulance, we don't need water right now --09:51-- 400 - all fire is out, under control --09:54-- Tender50 assignment complete --09:55-- 210 can you log wind speed and direction right now, and log it when the call came in 633 assignment complete --~10:15-- Sheriff units went assignment complete leaving KHP on scene The fire units also around this time started extrication.
