She starts by discussing the megaspore mother cell, which undergoes meiosis to produce four haploid megaspores. Only one of these megaspores survives and develops into the female gametophyte, which is a 7-celled structure. The female gametophyte contains an egg cell, two synergids, two polar nuclei, and three antipodals. The egg cell is the female gamete, and it is fertilized by the male gamete to produce a zygote. The zygote develops into an embryo, and the other cells of the female gametophyte provide nourishment for the embryo.
