Youths threw stones as officers tried to disperse the crowd. Some also broke shop windows in the city centre and began stoning and looting passing cars outside a Nairobi police station. Taxi drivers began throwing stones back, sparking a stampede among pedestrians. The protesters carried banners and chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Mohammed Hussein Ali. The student was killed by police during a protest on Thursday against the killing of the activists outside one of the residence halls at the University of Nairobi. Three policemen were arrested over that death. "We want the police, especially the police commissioner to tell us what is really happening because they are telling us they have arrested three police men concerning the shooting of the student," explained Nairobi University student, Eric Mwembesa, as the demonstration took place. The police commissioner has said that authorities were investigating all possibilities regarding the killings of the activists, whose deaths came a week after a United Nations expert accused Kenya's police of running death squads during a crackdown on the notorious Mungiki gang. The police commissioner has repeatedly dismissed charges of police links to hit squads. Many of the students on Tuesday also wore black T-shirts with political slogans demanding legislators pay taxes on their fat salaries or the resignation of parliament - a sign that grievances from different groups might be converging. Kenya's coalition government has only been in power for a year but it is already embroiled in a series of financial scandals at a time when the price of staple foods is rocketing and millions of Kenyans are at risk of hunger.
