There might be numerous reasons, some to get genuine, authentic answers and some just for the sake of asking. In today’s episode, Jesus is confronted with a similar situation. In the Gospels, we have seen Jesus, answering the questions, some being the genuine ones like “Who is my neighbor?” or “Which is the greatest of all commandments?” But here we see Pharisees asking him questions on Marriage but in the context of divorce “Is it lawful for a man to divorce the spouse and marry another.’ Will you expect these questions from Pharisees who are well versed in Jewish Law knowing 613 Commandments, that’s a whole lot of it. Doesn’t it sound silly? But it's not silly. Because they do have a hidden agenda to trap Jesus into controversy. But Jesus is wise enough to answer this question in a way that is understandable, convincing. We also face such situations where questions are asked implying a controversial answer. How can we confront them? First, we should have clarity about the questions asked. Jesus asked Pharisees “What did Moses command you?” to get clarity about their understanding of Law. Secondly, what does that question imply? Though Pharisees answered the “HOW” of the question, they did not answer the WHY of the question which is available in Deuteronomy 24:1 “a woman was divorced by her husband because he found something disgraceful about her.” As mentioned they did have a hidden agenda of trapping Jesus into heresy. Thirdly, based on the first two steps, we should explain the topic and conclude. Jesus gave a clear-cut answer which silenced the Pharisees. Let us reflect on our own lives. Do we ask questions to genuinely know something or do we ask questions to trap or make a fool of the other person? Let us ask the help of the Holy Spirit, our source of wisdom, to guide us on our way to becoming authentic members of the Body of Christ. Amen #dominicanmediamission #DOMINICANFRIARSINDIA
