Supreme Court bench revisits two decade old Hindutva judgement

A seven-judge Bench of the Supreme Court began a crucial hearing to decide whether an appeal for vote in the name of religion will come within the ambit of 'corrupt practice'. The court will give ruling on the interpretation of Section 123 (3) of the Representation of the People Act. A three judge bench in the year 1995 bench had held that vote in name of "Hindutva/ Hinduism" did not prejudicially affect any candidate. Questions were raised on this verdict and since then three election petitions are pending on the subject before the apex court. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ‘DD News’ is the News Channel of India's Public Service Broadcaster 'Prasar Bharati'.
